Daisy Knees

By Ms. Cherry Coronado

I sit on the hospital bed

Cold

From the air ventilating above my bed

In the children’s suicide ward

Using a thick blue highlighter

Drawing daisies on each of my knees

The nurse sternly warns me not to do so

I’m sorry

I didn’t have any paper

So I will use my already worn out body

As my canvas

Poet Statement:

I derive my writing from events all the way down to the people who have been contributors to certain parts of it; it has helped me get out of my emotional discomfort and confusion in a way where I don’t bother anyone. I hope that whoever reads my poetry can find a way to connect and heal in some way when others around them don’t completely understand how they feel or know how to correctly help.
