Three Poems

By Odessa Von Ruden
Longing For September

i used to be

polished,

shiny,

immaculate

crisp snaps

and

thin corners,

until i became

silver drops

on

bedraggled locks

gone were my

perfect prisms,

replaced by

tarnished facets

and dulled edges

Accepting October

I am not polished,

nor am I tarnished

I refuse the comprehension

of flawed comparisons

I welcome in equal shares,

snaps & crumbles

I am whole

I am indivisible

I am its own

twisted,

cracked,

perfection

Not Nobody

i'm not the girl

who’s written into ballads

who’s painted into art

i'm not the heartthrob

not the girl with dyed hair

not the manic pixie dream girl

i'm not noticeable

not extraordinary

not even weird yet somehow effortlessly charming

i'm the girl

that no one looks for

i'm the extra

in a one-sided film

i'm the girl

overlooked

but i still demand to be seen

Poet Statement - Odessa Von Ruben:
I'm a junior at Decatur who's passionate about feminism, anti-racism, and other forms of activism. I love to write, namely, fanfictions from book series like the Hunger Games and even The Lord of the Rings, although I'm currently working on a fantasy short story from a villain's perspective. I find the villains the most interesting characters of any story, so I love writing them. :)
